Project Care is a community-wide initiative to assist and empower foster care youth who are graduating high school and thus aging out of Iowa’s foster care system. Project Care was recently recognized for its work in the community by KDEC Radio and Thrivent Financial by receiving the “Share the Love” award, which recognizes the efforts of those who are making a real difference in our communities.
Each year, we partner with Lutheran Services in Iowa to identify students who are graduating and leaving foster care. We do two things for each student:
1. Through financial and in-kind donations, we provide each graduate with the basic essentials for setting up their dorm room or apartment. Items range from dish towels to mixing bowls, sheet sets to small appliances. Because of the ongoing generosity of the community, we are able to supply each student with their own, new laptop computer.
2. To celebrate their achievements, we throw a graduation party spring for these students, their foster families, and members of the congregation and community. This is our opportunity to celebrate with them (cake, decorations, and all!), to gift them with all of their basic essentials, and to bless them on all their future endeavors.
